Understanding paper weights

Understanding paper weights

When choosing the correct paper for your printed products (e.g. documents, photos) it's important to consider the weight of the paper as well as your printer's capabilities.

Paper is measured in grams per square meter (GSM); the higher the GSM the heavier and thicker the paper will be.

The choice on what sort of paper to print on will entirely depends on personal choice. However, as a general guide;
35-55gsm: Newspaper or catalogues from Coles, ALDI or Woolworths.
65gsm: EFTPOS receipts or cash register receipts.
80gsm: Everyday home or office copy paper, standard letter envelopes
130-170gsm: Posters, brochures or flyers.
180-250gsm: Photo paper.
250-300gsm: Most common business cards.
Before opting for the heaviest weight, check that your printer can accommodate this weight.

To check if your printer is capable of printing the selected paper weight, check the printer's technical specifications. This information is usually under:
  1. Supported paper weights (or types)
  2. Paper handling
If you choose a paper weight that is outside of your printer's capabilities you will experience frequent jamming.
